"I have taken four of the courses at THE DARKROOM: Beginning Photography, Darkroom I, Metering and Portrait Lighting.

I highly recommend the small class sizes and 'hands-on' teaching used at THE DARKROOM. You will learn so much more about photography and have fun, too!

I am now assisting professional photographers in everything from weddings to environmental portraits and am a member of Northern California Professional Photographers (NCPP)"..........Kevin Vasquez

 Beginning Photography

Learn to take your digital or film camera off automatic. Are you making the transition from film to digital? Advance from snapshots to photographs. Good photography is the result of skill, not chance. The camera is just a tool. Learning the basic skills can be fun and easy.

Watch your photographs improve during the next four weeks. Understanding the basics, such as focusing, aperture (f-stops), shutter speeds, ISO, white balance, reading histograms, depth-of-field and metering, will give you the ability to capture that once in a lifetime shot. You will also learn to choose the appropriate lenses and filters.

Bring your digital or film camera, lenses and camera manual to the first lesson.

 Beyond Basic Photography

Give your photographs impact and develop your "photographic eye". Good photography begins in the mind of the photographer. Whether you are using digital or film, knowing the basic concepts of composition will improve your photographs.

Enhance your creative skills in three weeks. Bring in your own good and bad examples to the first class meeting for constructive critique. In the following weeks, assignments will be given in the compositional skills you need to help the camera reproduce what your mind's eye sees.

Prerequisite:
Beginning Photography or equivalent skills.

Intermediate Photography

Two field trips provide supervised instruction on location. Each photo outing will be followed by a class session to discuss and evaluate your progress.

You will add new tricks to your photographic knowledge including creative depth-of-field, further uses of filters, the effects of file size, advanced composition and improved metering skills.

Prerequisite: Beginning Photography or equivalent.

By carefully planning the surroundings, clothing, lighting, etc., you will learn to use "planned spontaneity" to capture the essence of childhood. Bring your camera and a few examples of your work to the first session to gain a new perspective on preserving those special family moments.
